絨毛膜外性胎盤を、辺縁部に襞があるかどうかで周郭胎盤と画縁胎盤に区分するのは、広く行われている分類法である。松岡健太郎『やさしくわかる 胎盤のみかた・調べかた』(診断と治療社; 2016). は、写真が豊富で簡潔に記述された胎盤病理学の参考書であるが、これの 36 ページ 図 4-2 でも
周郭胎盤では絨毛膜板辺縁から卵膜が折り返してひだを作っている.画縁胎盤ではひだは形成されず, 移行部は平坦である.
と述べられている。この書き方だと、定義ではなく周郭胎盤や画縁胎盤の性質を述べた記載であるようにも読め、曖昧である。しかし他に両者の相違を明確に述べている部分がないので、たぶん松岡も中山と同様に、これを定義として扱っているのだろう。
米国の文献でも同様の記載がみられる。Heerema-Mckenney et al. Diagnostic Pathology Placenta, 2nd ed. (Elsevier; 2019). は、Elsevier 社の病理診断学の参考書シリーズ Diagnosticc Pathology の胎盤編である。これの 28 ページをみると、周郭胎盤 (Circumvallate placenta) について
Membranes fold onto themselves, forming lip at junction of extraplacental membranes and chorionic disc
とする一方、画縁胎盤 (Circummarginate placenta) は
Membranes arise inside circumference of margin with flat junction
としており、中山や松岡と同様に襞の有無で両者を区別している。
一方、この襞による区分に反対する意見もある。米軍病理学研究所 (armed forces institute of pathology; AFIP) の病理学アトラス胎盤編(F. T. Kraus et al., Atlas of nontumor pathology, Placental pathology (ARP; 2004).) では、Circumvallation/Circummargination の項で定義として
Circumvallation is the complete or partial insertion of the fetal membranes in the placental disc away from the peripheral margin,with or without a distinct ridge of degenerating blood clot.
としている。注意すべき点として、襞の有無を問題にしておらず、絨毛膜外性胎盤の同義語として周郭胎盤 (circumvallate) を用いている。さらに画縁胎盤 (circummarginate) については
The term circummarginate refers to cases without the ridge and should be probably be abandoned for the sake of clarity.
と述べており、周郭胎盤と画縁胎盤の区別は曖昧であるからやめるべきだ、との立場を示している。さらに胎盤病理学の名著K. Benirschke et al., Pathology of the Human Placenta, 6th ed. (Springer; 2012). の 387 ページでも周郭胎盤 (circumvallate) について

としており、襞の有無には言及していない。さらに画縁胎盤 (circummarginate) については
